Waist beads are a centuries old West African symbol of femininity, spirituality, sensuality, growth, womanhood, maturity, protection & even weight-awareness, if the latter interests you.  Some mother's in West African traditions tied their daughters first strand of beads in celebration of her passage into womanhood after her first moon cycle. They are a beautiful way to adorn & love on your body while keeping the traditions of the diaspora! Knowing that these types of practices took place in Africa for centuries, I find waist beads to be a spiritual, intimate & an undeniable mark of our cultural heritage.
